Kampsen breaks South Dakota State men’s 800-meter record at Iowa State Classic

Brandon Kampsen set a new South Dakota State University (SDSU) record in the men’s 800-meter event at the Iowa State Classic on Friday evening. Kampsen finished fifth overall with a time of 1:49.80, surpassing the previous program record of 1:49.82 set by Jake Schneller in 2012.

Head coach Rod DeHaven commented on the team’s performance, stating, “It was a very productive day here at Iowa State. Getting a school record and multiple top tens is an indication of a good day. It wasn’t perfect, you know, but we’re happy with the outcome.”

In other events, Cody Larson won the mile race with a time of 4:01.58, making him the third-fastest performer in SDSU history for that event. Will Lohr also competed in the mile and finished in 4:06.45 to place among the top five.

On the women’s side, Meghan Ford took first place in her race with a time of 4:50.46 and became the fifth-fastest woman in SDSU history for that distance. Emma Gonzalez followed closely behind, finishing second with a time of 4:53.92 and ranking eighth all-time for SDSU.

In sprint events, Jenna Johnson secured victory in the women’s 400-meter race with a time of 55.53 seconds. Erika Kuntz also placed within the top five and became SDSU’s fourth-best performer ever for that event by finishing in 55.84 seconds.

Hannah Spoden joined SDSU’s all-time top ten list for the women’s 800 meters after recording a time of 2:12.28 to finish sixth overall and ninth-best historically.

In field events, Jalyn Shepherd achieved a personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 59-09.75 (18.23m), placing among the top five performers and moving up to eighth-best in school history for that event. Lydia Hill also competed and finished seventh with her throw of 56-06.50 (17.23m).

For distance races, Kelsey Schmidt completed the women’s 3000-meter run in fourth place at 10:00.04 while Nicole Swanson followed close behind to finish sixth at 10:00.63.

Among other results from field events, Ryan Hackbart finished seventh with his throw measuring 58-08.75 (17.90m), and Sam Ruid placed ninth after posting a mark of 53-05.75 (16.30m).
