The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team defeated Kansas City 93-40 on Saturday at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings, South Dakota. The Jackrabbits led from start to finish, with a strong first quarter giving them an early advantage.
Madison Mathiowetz was key in the opening period, scoring 14 of the team’s first 19 points and helping to fuel a 22-3 run that ended the quarter. SDSU shot 80% from the field during those ten minutes, making seven three-pointers and recording ten assists on twelve made baskets to take a 32-10 lead.
Emilee Fox set a new personal record with 26 points, hitting seven out of nine attempts from three-point range. She also collected six rebounds and provided four assists. Mathiowetz finished with 18 points overall, along with five assists and four rebounds.
Brooklyn achieved her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with eleven points, thirteen rebounds, and a career-high seven assists. Hadley Thul contributed a career-best thirteen points and added four rebounds.
SDSU displayed effective play on both offense and defense, shooting 60% from the field for the game and converting fifteen of twenty-five three-point shots. The Jackrabbits assisted on twenty-eight baskets compared to six by Kansas City and held a rebound margin of forty-one to twenty-three. Kansas City managed only thirty percent shooting accuracy.
For Kansas City, Emani Bennett came off the bench to score fourteen points—the only player on her team to reach double figures.
With this win, South Dakota State improves its record to twenty wins and six losses overall, including ten wins in Summit League play against two defeats. This marks fifteen consecutive seasons that SDSU has reached at least twenty victories under head coach Aaron Johnston. The all-time series between SDSU and Kansas City now stands at twenty-three wins for SDSU against one loss for Kansas City. The Jackrabbits have also shot better than fifty percent in eleven games this season.
Kansas City’s record falls to seven wins and nineteen losses overall (four wins and nine losses in conference).
South Dakota State’s next game will be against Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Thursday evening at Mabee Center.
