For over 50 years, the City of Brookings has hosted a spring cleanup that allows residents to place their rubbish, debris, and branches in front of their homes to be picked up during a designated time period. The City of Brookings Public Works Department including: Streets, Parks, Recreation and Forestry, Solid Waste Collection and the Brookings Regional Landfill work together to clean up and dispose of the material that’s been placed on the boulevards.
This year, residents can start placing their items on the curb starting Monday, April 4th. All items must be out by Sunday, April 10th. City crews will start the curbside pick-up on Monday, April 11th. The city will be canvassing the town one time only.
Free dumping at the landfill will also be available April 4th through April 30th. The Landfill is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Saturday April 9th extended hours will be offered from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Brookings residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free dumping by hauling as much of their smaller items to the Landfill as possible. This will allow city crews to focus on faster removal of the remaining large curbside items. The City asks residents to remember all loads must be covered or a $10.00 fine will be assessed.
Yard-waste should be placed in residents’ brown yard waste carts or be brought to the Citizens Campus which is located at the landfill. The Citizens Campus will be open 24/7 starting April 1st. Yard waste cart curbside pickup will begin on April 4th.
New this year, the City’s GIS division has launched a new spring cleanup real-time tracker map tool which will provide residents with block-by-block real-time updates showing which sections of town have been completed. Residents can access the tool by visiting www.cityofbrookings-sd.gov/cleanuptracker. Households must follow the guidelines and timelines that have been put in place, or their materials will not be picked up.
