PRESS RELEASE: City to Host Public Input Session on Stormwater Master Plan

The City of Brookings is updating its Stormwater Master Plan and is seeking community input at an upcoming event. The Stormwater Master Plan Public Input Session will be held on Thursday, April 21st, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will be held in the City Council Chambers Room 310 in the Brookings City and County Government Center, located at 520 3rd Street. Opening remarks and a community welcome will begin at 5:45 PM.

STORMWATER MASTER PLAN OVERVIEW

The Brookings Stormwater Master Plan is a 12-month planning effort that will take a fresh look at the City’s stormwater infrastructure, with the primary objective of developing and prioritizing projects to be implemented over the next decade. The City’s stormwater system collects runoff from roofs and paved surfaces like sidewalks, driveways, streets, and parking lots and transports it to nearby creeks and rivers. The management of this system has many benefits to the larger community, including maintaining and improving water quality, reducing flood risks, supporting resident safety, and lessening damage to public and private property. As we plan for the next 10 years as a community, key plan goals include:

  • Address and reduce the potential for flooding throughout the City
  • Create a non-biased process for prioritizing improvement projects that make responsible use of the City’s financial resources
  • Reduce the City’s impact on downstream communities
  • Develop a resilient plan that addresses flooding, while also considering environmental and social benefits
As a community driven process, the City is seeking input to ensure that the Stormwater Master Plan is reflective of the goals and needs of residents and local businesses. This event will provide additional information about the planning process, allow community members to provide feedback on the initial findings, and gain input on the City’s current stormwater system.
