REMINDER: The Brookings Regional Landfill is encouraging Hamlin, Deuel, Kingsbury, Lake, Brookings, and Moody County residents to dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste (HHW) in a safe and environmentally responsible way at its Household Hazardous Waste event on Saturday, August 27th at the Swiftel Center south parking lot, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event is free with a recommended donation of a non-perishable food item(s) which will be donated to the Brookings Food Pantry.
“I am excited to be hosting this event again in effort to provide our residents an easy, safe disposal option so we can keep these materials out of the Landfill. We received so much positive feedback last year, we hope to see an increase in participation this year.,” said Katie Stiegelmeier Brookings Solid Waste Division’s business operations and logistics manager.
Staff will be on-site to collect small, household quantities of products such as paint, weed killers, auto repair products, household cleaners, and compact fluorescent bulbs. There are a few items that won’t be accepted such as commercial waste, industrial waste, medical or radioactive waste, explosives, ammunition, electronics, antifreeze, and oil.
According to the EPA, improper disposal of HHW can cause harm to sanitation workers, contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems, pollute bodies of water, or present danger to children or pets if left around the house. The landfill is working with Veolia, a 3rd party that helps manage, transport, and properly dispose of hazardous or regulated wastes.
