March 30th marks Doctors’ Day, a day where we celebrate and honor the tireless work of physicians who have dedicated their lives to improving the health of others. The day was first observed in 1933 in Winder, Georgia, in commemoration of Dr. Crawford W. Long's use of ether anesthesia, which revolutionized medical practice. And while we recognize the importance of medical advances, we also celebrate the compassion and dedication of healthcare providers who work tirelessly to care for their patients.

In rural areas, healthcare providers play an especially vital role in the community. Wide spaces separate towns and farms, making access to medical care a challenge. Yet, through innovation, good planning, and the talents of skilled professionals, rural healthcare systems can provide high-quality care to patients when they need it most.

We spoke to Jessica Muellenberg, Marketing / Credentialing Director, at the Community Memorial Hospital & Redfield Clinic, who spoke to us about some of the challenges that the rural hospital faces: “Physicians who work in rural areas, like those at the Community Memorial Hospital and Redfield Clinic, face unique challenges. They often treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries, and their days can be long and packed with appointments. However, their dedication to their patients and their communities drives them to provide the best possible care, no matter the circumstances.

The work of rural healthcare providers is vital to the wellbeing of the 20% of Americans who live in rural areas. However, only 10% of all American doctors practice in rural America. This means that the healthcare providers who serve rural areas often face additional challenges, including long distances between patients and limited resources. Despite these challenges, rural healthcare providers are committed to their work and are always ready to help their patients, no matter the obstacle.”

The talent pool at Redfield’s Memorial Hospital and Clinic: A team of dedicated physicians and advanced practitioners

According to Muellenberg, the talent pool at the hospital is vast . “We are grateful for the talented and dedicated physicians and advanced practice providers who care for our patients. Their knowledge, skill, and diligence are evident in the care they provide, and we are proud to have them as part of our team.”

She went on to add, “While we cannot individually highlight every member of our medical staff, we recognize the traits that bond them in service – their dedication, empathy, and expertise. These traits are essential to providing high-quality care, especially in rural areas where access to medical care can be limited.

As March unfolds and spring creeps closer, let us join together in showing our appreciation for all the physicians and healthcare providers who have dedicated their lives to improving the health of others. We celebrate them not just on Doctors’ Day, but every day, because they have earned it. They are the heart of our communities, and we are grateful for their commitment to our health and wellbeing.”

Physicians at Redfields’ Community Memorial Hospital are:

Dr. Randall Waldner

Dr. John Berg

Dr. Alex Falk

Dr. Kristine Wren and

Dr. Matthew Owens.
