With fireworks sales underway, the City of Brookings reminds the public that lighting fireworks within the city limits is illegal.

Brookings City Code Article IV, Section 34.121-125 states that it is unlawful for any person to use or explode any fireworks within the city limits. The ordinance defines fireworks as any combustible or explosive composition. This includes, but is not limited to, common fireworks such as firecrackers, sparklers, model (bottle) rockets, and Roman candles.

A public fireworks display will take place Tuesday, July 4, outside the Dacotah Bank Center (formerly the Swiftel Center) at 1441 6th St., starting at approximately 10 p.m. The City of Brookings allocated $10,000 for this year's fireworks display. The Brookings Fire Department is responsible for the show.

The fireworks display will cap off the annual Uncle Sam Jam, which will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Dacotah Bank Center. The event will feature free fun activities and live music for all ages. Multiple sponsors make the Uncle Sam Jam possible. Active Heating Inc. is this year’s Presenting Sponsor; the supporting Sponsor is Brookings County.

Also happening on Independence Day is the 40th annual Fourth of July Parade, co-sponsored by Brookings Radio and the Brookings Fire Department.

The parade will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Entrants should line up at 9:30 a.m. by the Brookings Police Department at 307 Third Ave. The parade route is east on Third Street to Medary Avenue; north on Medary Avenue to Sixth Street; west on Sixth Street to Main Avenue; south on Main Avenue to Third Street. For parade questions, contact Cami Powers, Brookings Radio general manager, at Cami.Powers@AlphaMediaUSA.com.
