Rep. Dusty Johnson, a member of the U.S. Congress representing South Dakota's at-large district since 2019, shared his views on several issues through a series of tweets. Born in Pierre, South Dakota in 1976, Johnson graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1999 and now resides in Mitchell.
On March 27, 2025, Johnson remarked "America’s strength on the global stage is a powerful deterrent to terrorist regimes." He emphasized the strategic importance of a robust international presence as a means to counteract hostile activities.
Later that day, Johnson addressed concerns over foreign investments in education, highlighting that "American universities have been receiving funds from our foreign adversaries like China – allowing those countries to have an influence in American education. Congress must protect our young adults from the malign influence of our adversaries." Johnson stressed the significance of shielding educational institutions from undue foreign influence.
In a follow-up tweet, Johnson announced his support for legislative measures designed to introduce stricter financial disclosure requirements within the education sector. He noted, "I voted to pass the DETERRENT Act to ensure our colleges disclose these funds – increasing transparency and accountability in higher education and protecting national security." This act aims to enhance oversight and ensure the integrity of financial interactions affecting national security.
