U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor regarding recent Israeli airstrikes in Iran. Thune highlighted the longstanding tensions between Iran and Israel, stating, "for far too long, the mullahs in Iran have publicly aspired to wipe Israel off the face of the map."
Thune emphasized Iran's role in supporting terrorist activities in the Middle East, mentioning, "it was Hamas who killed more than a thousand Israelis on October 7, 2023, but it was Iran who made that attack possible, through years of funding, training, and weaponry provided to this terrorist organization."
He discussed Israel's response with airstrikes targeting sites in Iran linked to its nuclear program. Thune conveyed his support for Israel by saying he had spoken with the Israeli ambassador and expressed his hope for successful operations that could prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.
Thune noted that while U.S. military forces are not directly involved in offensive actions against Iran, they are assisting in defending Israel from missile attacks. He reiterated U.S. commitment to Israel's defense and peace efforts in the region: "President Trump and our country remain steadfast in our defense of Israel and committed to working toward peace in the Middle East."
He concluded by warning Iran against any hostile actions towards Americans: "And should Iran have any designs on Americans, I urge the mullahs to think long and hard about the consequences."
