U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed a press conference in Washington, discussing the progress on the reconciliation bill that Republicans believe will advance President Trump's agenda and enhance American security and prosperity.
Thune emphasized the bill's focus on tax relief for American families. "We are making good headway on the reconciliation bill," he stated. The legislation aims to make permanent the lower tax rates from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, extend the expanded child tax credit, and maintain an increased standard deduction used by 90 percent of Americans.
The bill also incorporates several initiatives from President Trump, including no taxes on tips, overtime, interest on new car loans, and reduced taxes for seniors. Thune explained these measures as efforts to allow Americans to retain more earnings for personal decisions rather than sending funds to Washington.
In addition to financial relief, Thune highlighted aspects of national security within the legislation. "Couple that with what it does on modernizing our military, making the country safer," he said. He also noted provisions related to border security aimed at enhancing national safety.
Republican leaders are optimistic about finalizing this legislative package by week's end.
