U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor, emphasizing the importance of a reconciliation bill that aims to bolster national security. He described the legislation as a historic investment in the nation's safety.

Thune stated, "Madam President, we are rapidly approaching floor consideration of our reconciliation bill – and the opportunity to make a historic investment in our nation’s security." He underscored the critical nature of national security, saying, "If we don’t get national security right, the rest is conversation."

The Senator expressed concerns about U.S. readiness and China's advancements in defense capabilities. The proposed bill seeks to address these issues by investing in various defense sectors such as shipbuilding, missile defense, and nuclear modernization.

Thune highlighted that while the bill is not a replacement for annual defense funding, it represents significant progress in updating national security measures. "With this bill, we can put our military – and thus our national security – in a much better place going forward," he remarked.

In addition to military enhancements, Thune pointed out that border security is another focal point of the legislation. He warned of potential threats from unsecured borders and emphasized investments in barriers, technology, and personnel to strengthen border protection.

The reconciliation bill also addresses energy security by promoting domestic energy production. Thune criticized previous restrictions on resource access under the Biden administration and advocated for utilizing abundant domestic energy resources.

Concluding his remarks, Thune acknowledged those who contributed to developing the bill's provisions and expressed optimism about its passage: "I’m grateful for all those who have worked so hard to develop these portions of the bill."
