U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the Senate floor on June 30, 2025, discussing a significant bill that has been under development for several months. He began by expressing gratitude to the staff who contributed to the bill's progress, emphasizing their dedication and service.

Thune highlighted the impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, stating it led to low unemployment, reduced poverty levels, and increased incomes. He emphasized that extending tax relief is crucial to prevent substantial tax increases for families earning less than $400,000 annually. "It’s people – it’s families – making less than $400,000 a year on whom the bulk of this would fall," Thune stated.

He noted that without action, small businesses could face a $600 billion tax increase. Thune explained that certain benefits such as untaxed tips and overtime would aid working professionals like nurses and firefighters.

Addressing Medicaid reforms, Thune criticized the program's unsustainable growth rate and advocated for efficiency improvements. "And so what this does, it makes some reforms," he said, mentioning work requirements as part of these changes.

Thune also touched upon fiscal policies used by previous administrations and expressed skepticism about Democrats' newfound concern over deficits. He underscored Republicans' preference for lower taxes and decentralization of power from Washington D.C., contrasting it with Democrats' approach.

The proposed legislation aims to extend existing tax policies while incorporating new provisions beneficial to working Americans. Thune concluded by asserting that the bill is beneficial for America’s safety, strength, and prosperity: "This good for America. This is good for the American people."
