U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) appeared on Fox News with Martha MacCallum to discuss recent legislative changes aimed at addressing the national debt and improving fiscal sustainability. Thune emphasized the necessity of these changes, citing a $36 trillion debt that continues to grow.
Thune highlighted the importance of work requirements for individuals receiving government benefits, stating, "One of the things that we said as a result of the legislation that we passed last week is there ought to be some reasonable expectation that people who are getting benefits through government programs are at least attempting to find jobs."
He addressed concerns about potential impacts on rural hospitals by mentioning reinvestments included in the bill to support them financially if needed.
Regarding opposition from Democrats, Thune remarked, "Well, don’t believe the threats … These are scare tactics. This is the Democrat playbook. They’ve tried it over and over and over again."
The senator underscored reforms related to tax relief, energy dominance, border security, military modernization, and significant savings achieved through the bill.
Thune concluded by reiterating his belief in commonsense changes necessary for a sustainable fiscal future: "But the fact of the matter is, these are changes that are long overdue."
