Rep. Dusty Johnson, who represents South Dakota’s at-large district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media platform this week to highlight legislative initiatives on cryptocurrency and national security concerns regarding Chinese technology.
On July 15, Johnson posted, "It’s Crypto Week in the House. I’m excited to consider historic legislation like my CLARITY Act to encourage innovation in the United States so America can be the ‘Crypto Capital of the World.’"
The following day, he elaborated on the aims of his proposed bill: "The CLARITY Act sets clear rules to:
Protect consumers
Protect developers
Strengthen the digital asset market
Increase transparency and accountability" (July 16).
Later that same day, Johnson addressed concerns about foreign technology in American infrastructure. He stated, "Chinese LiDAR’s millimeter-level precision is used across America’s transportation system, but the Chinese Communist Party may have access to this sensitive data, threatening supply chain security.
America must ban Chinese LiDAR to protect critical infrastructure." (July 16).
Johnson has served as South Dakota’s at-large representative since 2019, succeeding Kristi Noem. Born in Pierre, South Dakota in 1976 and currently residing in Mitchell, Johnson graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BA in 1999.
