Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson introduced a bill to restrict the Department of Transportation from allocating federal funds to sanctuary cities. According to Johnson, protestors in these cities have damaged infrastructure like roads and bridges as a form of political expression. He stated, “Local authorities allow these protestors to destroy property then turn around and ask the federal government to foot the bill.”

Secretary Duffy has expressed support for this legislation.

Federal immigration officials are currently working on deporting criminal illegal aliens across various U.S. cities. However, some sanctuary cities have limited immigration officials' access or defied lawful detainers from the Department of Homeland Security.

In April 2025, President Trump issued Executive Order 14287, which suggests that sanctuary cities not complying with federal immigration laws may lose federal funding. Following recent riots in Los Angeles due to ICE enforcement actions, DOT Secretary Sean Duffy announced that no DOT funds would be provided to non-cooperative cities.

The No DOT Funds for Sanctuary Cities Act is supported by several U.S. Representatives: Brian Babin, Buddy Carter, Jeff Van Drew, Dave Taylor, Derrick Van Orden, Pat Harrigan, and Claudia Tenney.
